| nquinn's Full Review: Pioneer CDX-FM1257 Car CD Changer |
I am currently a car-audio product specialist at Best Buy.
I work with these products on a daily basis, and have seen
its advantages and drawbacks, and can safely comment on its
reliability.
The Pioneer CDX-FM1257 is a very good disc changer for the money.
The unit will work with any car stereo that has FM-radio.
For the money, you get quite a lot in this package. The changer
includes the modulator, a heads up display to show you track and disc
information, a 12 disc cartridge, and a wireless remote!
Another advantage of this changer is the fact that the modulator
unit is quite small, allowing it to fit in the cramped dashboards
of cars such as buicks, bmw's, and lincoln's, which tend to have
limited space. Other changers such as the Sony have a much larger
modulator which can be very difficult to install.
The sound quality of the 1257 is above average for a disc changer.
The selector switch allows you to choose between a few different
FM bands (between 89-93mhz). This is usually sufficient enough
to find an open band in your area.
In comparing the Pioneer to other units at our store (sony, clarion,
jvc, aiwa), I feel that the pioneer is a solid choice. The sound
quality is just as good as the sony's, but not quite as clear
as the clarion's.
Skipping is almost nonexistent with the double-floating suspension
used in the device, with the exception of the occasional railroad
tracks.
The 1257 is a reliable unit. I have seen almost none of these returned
with problems. Of the few that *have* been returned, the problem
was almost always as simple as a cartridge being jammed.
Overall, the Pioneer 1257 is a good changer for your money, especially
if you like the perks such as the wireless remote. It will compete
with the higher-end brand names such as alpine and kenwood, at
a much reduced price.
