When it was time to replace the old tape deck I decided to step up to some new technology. I selected the SONY MDS JE510 minidisc deck. It was on sale for about $200 so the price was right and I'd heard a lot of good things about minidisc systems. It was actually better than I expected. The sound quality is great, it's easy to record from cd, radio, or television, you can electronically label the disc and each track. You can even change the order of the tracks, and going from one track to another is as simple as changing channels on the tv. I'm no fan of complicated electronics, and I figured this thing out in about 20 minutes without having to resort to actually reading the manual. It does have a couple of minor drawbacks. If you don't stop recording when the disc is full it will go back to the beginning and start recording over your first track and if you don't pause between tracks it reads it as all one track, so you have to pay attention when recording. Overall though, I'm very happy with it. I've made several disks by taking some of my favorite tunes off my collection of hundreds of cd's. They come it handy when the radio is being lame, you get about 73 minutes of uninterrupted jams that you selected. I think these will soon replace cassettes as they are sturdier, sound better, and are much more versatile.
