Pleasantly Surprised

Mar 15 '00

I recently purchased a Blaupunkt Tokyo to replace the factory unit in a car that I recently purchased. I comparison shopped receivers in the Crutchfield catalog. (I usually purchase most of my electronics from them) After comparing features and prices, I decided to go with the Tokyo. The main reasons for choosing this receiver were the built-in high power and the excellent cd signal to noise ratio. The receiver is rated at 25 watts RMS power per channel. The RMS wattage figure is more important than peak power, because it is a measurement of the constant output of the reciever. I wanted a high-powered reciever because I didn't want to add an amplifier to the system at this time. At 25 watts RMS, the Blaupunkt was one of the highest. The cd signal to noise ratio measures the sound clarity of the cd player. The Tokyo was rated at 108db. The average (for higher end cd players) is probably about 94. (the higher the number the better)

The system was easily installed by myself and a friend. Crutchfield supplied wiring harnesses that tied into the factory harnesses so that no wire cutting was necessary.

I expected the unit to sound good.....but I was definitely very surprised with how good it actually sounds. The reciever can attain high volumes without distortion, and the clarity is fantastic. I did not change my factory speakers, and now see no reason to. Even through the factory speakers, the sound is incredible.

The features of the Tokyo are very nice. It has a "Key Card" security feature, which means that if a card (similar to a credit card) is not inserted behind the flip down face, the unit will not work. The face of the unit is not cluttered, and the display is very large and easily legible. There is a loudness feature, bass and treble controls, plus high and low eq settings, which when used with the bass and treble controls, can really fine tune your music. CD and FM station naming are also included features. The FM tuner picks up stations that I didn't even know existed. The unit also has CD changer controls.

I am extremely pleased with this receiver and would recommend it to anybody that wants a simple upgrade to their factory system, or is building a complete car audio system. You won't be disappointed.
