| dawnphillips's Full Review: RCA DS3232RD DIRECTV System |
But we're not. Occasionally we'll watch the final game of the NCAA or a major tournament of golf, but usually we like good movies and a variety of news programming.
We bought our satellite dish on a whim, after being tired of paying so much for cable. Everyone told us satellite was much cheaper. Not so! We ended up paying about the same (or MORE) per month for this as we were for cable (based on identical program choices).
When we first signed up with DirecTV, we received all their wonderful choices of programming at no extra charge...but after a couple of months they charge you. And it's up to YOU to call them and order the programming you really want.
If you want the basic and you don't call them to let them know, you're going to die when you get that "first real statement". Be warned.
Installation is available but we chose to do it ourselves. This was more of a manly thing than anything. Nevermind that it was January when we bought ours and everything was frozen outside. So think about having your dish installed (it's faster I bet). It's not hard, but it's inconvenient if the weather isn't just right.
And speaking of weather being just right, forget watching ANYTHING with a satellite if it rains very hard. We experienced black-outs on a regular basis because of wind (less than 20mph gusts) and rain and snow. And it wasn't an accumulation on the dish, rather it was just snowing outside. I feel sorry for the people who live in rainy climates!!!
During the short time we used our satellite (just under 3 months) I hated it every single minute it was being used. No local channels were available where we live - and this is the case in most areas. No Drew Carey show. No local news. Even the weather channel was unable to provide local forecasts. There are, for a premium price, thousands of sports channels to choose from, as well as blocks of premium movie channels. But you've got to pay just like you do with cable. Nothing is "thrown in for free".
Thankfully, we received a new cable company in our area shortly after purchasing/installing the satellite. They provide phone/cable/internet for one MUCH LOWER price. And the programming is wonderful. Local channels as well as pay-per-view, premium, sports, etc. And the internet connection is unmatched! We have gone from paying in upwards of $100 per month for satellite alone to $88 per month for cable/phone/internet. And it's as clear as the satellite.
I would recommend the dishes for sports fanatics or those who couldn't get regular cable wherever they live but that is all. It would be a luxury in motor homes. But it was a disappointment for us.
