| dlaktmb's Full Review: IO i-glasses X2 |
I am a film and movie fanatic, however, have been "tv-free" for almost 5 years now and have an apartment size such that a 200 person capacity movie theatre could not be installed in. I had been looking for a way to recreate the "big screen" experience at movie theatres at home, but without purchasing a $2000 LCD projector or $1000 big-screen TV.
Since I usually watch movies alone, I had come across IO Systems I-Glasses and immediately ordered a pair for less than $400 -- very reasonable.
The company shipped the glasses quickly, and they came in absolutely prime condition. I ordered a "re-furbished" pair from the company to save money, and was pleased at the excellent condition they came in.
Since I had them delivered to my work address, ALL of my coworkers saw them and immediately wanted to order some themselves!
Returning home, I hooked them up to a VCR and watched my first movie.
Installation was a breeze and the controls were very intuitive.
However, while watching the movie I had several problems. The *biggest* problem was a problem with *all* LCD-based screens, and that is if you look at it from a slight angle to colors begin to become reversed -- just like on a mini-LCD TV or like the old Sega Game Gear systems.
I adjusted and adjusted and adjusted the thing over and over and over, and simply could *not* get rid of the slight color inversion on the right "eye" LCD screen. Finally, after much fiddling, I could get it within acceptable levels, but had to keep still or I'd loose it.
At the end of the movie, upon taking the set of, I had red marks on my face from where the set was resting. Now, don't be afraid, it wasn't painful or a rash or anything, it's the same as when you sleep on a pillow and have wrinkles on your face in the morning, but I didn't like it.
The clarity of the movie was absolutely *amazing*, but again, the LCD color inversion bothered me. I was also dissappointed at the lack of simulating a "big screen" TV, and would estimate it only seemed like maybe a 25" TV. The trade-off of all the wires and what-not, especially if you have animals or small children that could snag them, was also not worth it.
I returned the set to the company the next day, pleased with my "trial" but decided that these were not for me. I had absolutely no problems returning the set.
I would *highly* encourage anyone considering purchasing from IO systems to "just do it" -- the company has excellent service and allows a 30 day trial, so YOU CAN'T LOOSE even if you end up returning them, and I think that these would be perfect for business travellers, single people, or hard-core gamers (these can be hooked up to a Sega or NES or even computer for gaming).
