| elmoebeesn's Full Review: Canon Elura MiniDV Camcorder w/ LCD |
My father has had this camera and mini DVD from Canon for quite a while and I just recently decided to give it a try. I have indeed found many things about the Canon Elura Mini DVD that are to my liking; however, I have also noticed some shortcomings about this expensive camera. The price of this unit approaches $1400 so therefore the user would certainly expect only the finest quality and unfortunately this is not always what the end result comes out to be.
The major problem that I have with this unit is the fact that the microphone has been positioned very poorly and cannot be adjusted without a great deal of difficulty. This is a struggle because the mic on the unit points toward the sky instead of the subject at which the camera points. This creates a hassle because often times the user, during playback, will hear more skyward noise such as birds instead of the conversation or action that was intended. You may think that this can be easily fixed by installing another mic; however, while this can be done it is not easy and is quite expensive. You have to install the second microphone with separate parts that do not come with the unit and this costs around $100 in all. Being that the unit is already so expensive, this extra cost should not be warranted, but unfortunately it is needed for quality filmmaking.
There are many points of quality that this camera does possess. These include an image stabilizer and a digital photo mode that fits more than 500 still clear pics on a tape. This is a great feature for storage and will help the user look at many pictures at a time. Furthermore, the sound is clear, although because of the poor mic placement it is not always what the user intended. Also, the pictures have 100 pixel resolution which makes for decent internet photography if the user is interested.
All in all, this is a decent unit. It does have many good features; however, the mic placement problem is a major one and something that should not be expected for this high of a price. Also, this camera is very expensive and only fairly serious photographers and filmmakers should consider it. Another alternative unit that has superior sound and mic placement would be the Elura 2.
