While shopping for a home theatre system, I was looking at getting a package like this one. I wanted a 5-speaker set, subwoofer, and a receiver all included in one package, so I looked at everything from Bose to KLH, and more. One day I stumbled accross this Sony system and noticed the price was only $399.99. I almost dismissed it as another cheaper system....until I turned it on.
This Sony surround system comes with a 450 watt receiver, which in itself is very nice. I believe it runs for about 200 bucks. It comes with 4 very small surround speakers, one center channel speaker, and an amplified subwoofer. I don't know about you, but I LOVE lots of bass, and this subwoofer will let you feel what you are listening to. The surround speaker compliment the bass nicely, and it makes for an all-around wonderful audio experience.
Now, don't think that this system will limit you only to watching movies. I bought a Sony 530 DVD player to go with it (they work EXCELLENT together), so I used it to play a couple of CD's. Music sounds great on this system. I hooked out satellite and VCR up to the receiver, as well as a new turntable (yes, I have lots of old records), and they all sounded great.
The remote for this systems has some buttons that are a little bit small, but the most important buttons glow in the dark, which I think is a great feature.
One note - if you plan on adding a DVD player to this system, make sure you get a DVD player with the AC/3 Decoded built in, otherwise you won't be able to experience the full range of sound that DVD's offer.
For the price and quality, you cannot beat this system!
