What you need to know before buying a digital camera

Digital cameras are to photographs what air jordans are to your game. They are cooler, they make you feel like a pro and have some really fancy stuff on them but they are too bloody expensive.
I bought a basic polaroid digital camera kit for $120 bucks and mind you, this was a special offer. Generally, you wont get a decent digital camera for less than a couple of hundred bucks.
There are a few things you should know and decide on before you buy a digital camera.
The pixels: I would say that a resolution of 640*480 is decent enough for casual usage though the results you get are very dependent on the distance(between the camera and the subject) and the light. It does restrict the cameras usage but cameras capable of these resolutions are reasonably priced. Also note that most of the cameras falling in this range do not have Xoom.So if you are looking for a camera to just take some snaps of your house, friends etc to send to your grandma then this is good enough. It is inadequate for traveling purposes. A higher resolution is obviously recommended but it will cost a hell lot of money- atleast around 300 bucks.
Memory: the photographs are stored in a memory card which maybe either inbuilt of external. If the card is internal then make sure that it can store atleast 25-30 snaps at the resolution that the camera works at because you will have to download the snaps on your PC before you can start using it again. The external memory card is therefore preferable as you can always buy extra ones.
LCD display: this has to be one of the coolest things about a digital camera. Most cameras have a display about 1.8 to 2 inches big which is small but adequate for most purposes. You can browse through all your photographs with this and see if you are satisfied with the result atlthough there is some discrepancy between how they look on the screen and on the computer as a jpeg. Some cameras also have a feature to delete the photographs you dont like, which I think, is very useful if you have limited memory.
Software: You can get some really awesome software from the net(most camera companies offer free downloads of this). This will enable you to do a whole lot of cool things with the snap like enhance the image, morf it etc. Make sure the software is compatible with the PC you have.
Take note that you will also have to spend money to buy the necessary peripherals like adapter, port connection wires etc.
Overall I will say that if you have the money, go for it. This makes taking snaps a lot of fun and allows you to do a whole lot of things you always wanted to do with your photographs.
