I have a small car so when I went out to find a lot of bass without using up a lot of space. I knew 2 speakers (unless they were 10s) were out of the question and since I had a 5 channel amp I didn't want to worry about running the speakers in series so I decided to just go with 1 12".
I realized going with 1 speaker was not going to be as loud, so I had to find something to make up for that lack of bass. That "something" was this Q-Logic bandpass box. The box retailed in the store for about $100 but I got it for a little cheaper. I did not realize a piece of wood would make my speaker so much louder. I have 200 watts running to it and it sounds more like 400.
Basically, what a bandpass box does is simple. The subwoofer is mounted inside a dual chambered box. The woofer drives air from the sealed compartment into the ported chamber (the 2 holes coming out the top). The sound waves emerge out of the ported side much louder then they would out of a sealed box. These boxes are perfect for rap lovers.
This box is also very sturdy. It is constructed of medium density fiberboard which is about 1 1/4" thick in the front and 5/8" thick around the speaker which helps bring out that good quality sound.
Some people think a bandpass box degrades the quality of the sound a subwoofer, but if you buy a high enough quality subwoofer you shouldn't notice a lack in quality, but if you do it is definitely made up for with the huge bass improvement.
I would definitely recommend this box over a regular sealed box because of the extra bass it brings to the table. True, it may cost you almost double what a regular box does but it's more then a piece of wood. It really brings your sub to life.
