I am looking for something better...

Oct 18 '00

I purchased a Pioneer PD-F407 multi-disk, file-type CD player about one year ago. I wanted a multi-disk player that was inexpensive (this one was: under $100) and had a capacity greater than 10 disks (this one holds 25). Also, I wanted a player that was front-loading (and not tray-loading) and that did not require special cartridges. This CD player met all my requirements.

After using this machine on a near-daily basis for about one year, I am ready to start shopping for a newer, better player.

This 1-bit DLC (Direct Linear Conversion) system does a fine job for my simple needs, but I have experienced some troubles. A couple of times, some weird things happen with the LED display and the electronic circuitry and I am unable to play my CDs. I can’t explain it, but I find it necessary to unplug the unit to simply turn it off; I then have to wait a minute before plugging it back in and turning it on. NOT A GOOD SIGN. Also, the CD loading door “sticks” and has to be forced open. I do not like forcing things... especially things that are made out of plastic.

Pros: cheap - under $100; holds 25 CDs so you can play music for hours on end...

Cons: cheaply constructed, questionable component quality
