Panasonic 900MHz Cordless, model KX-TCC902-B
Jan 10 '00
My family received this cordless telephone from relatives as a Christmas present. With our old Sony telephone barely clinging to its life, we needed the Panasonic cordless to become our main phone. Now, about two years later, I feel ambivalent about this telephone. Though the phone has a couple of nice features, the Panasonic engineers failed to design a phone that functions well as... well... as a phone.
The phone includes a caller-id screen on the backside, which is now fairly standard in high-quality cordless phones. The reception is usually very clear with the 900MHz signal and the range is very good. The base has no speakerphone included, though it is offered on more-expensive models. The battery lasts very long (4.5 hours talk time / 14 days stand-by). All of these features are fairly good.
However, the phone picks up an incredible amount of background noise which totally ruins conversations with even slight ambient noise. When answering calls while watching TV, you have to turn down the volume of the TV until it is almost inaudible. I can't tell you how many lines of
dialogue I have missed because someone else in the room was speaking at a normal volume. Hopefully, later models of this Panasonic phone have fixed this major flaw, but I'm forced to bear with it.
Though it may have nice sugar-coated features, it seems as if Panasonic forgot to make a solid phone before packing on cute functions like Caller ID and voice mail. I can't recommend a phone that doesn't have what it NEEDS to provide: good lines of communication.
