AT&T's phone service in the NYC metropolitan area is very spotty. Particularly in New Jersey, which is ironic because AT&T's corporate headquarters are all over suburban New Jersey.
The specific areas I can attest to it being poor are Somerset, Basking Ridge, and downtown Jersey City (and points in between). Driving along 287 or 78, your service is sure to go in and out. You cannot conduct a 15 minute conversation without your service being interrupted three times. In Jersey City it is horrendous. I've heard theories that it is caused by interference from the Newark Airport radar, and I do know that downtown Jersey City is notoriously bad for cell phones. Nevertheless, it is frustrating.
From speaking with friends and colleagues, Bell Atlantic seems to have the best service for heavy usage in the NYC region. AT&T's service seems to be good elsewhere. I have used it in DC, Boston, Rhode Island, Chicago, and San Francisco and have been happy for the most part. The One Rate plan is nice, but no longer a distinguishing factor as everyone is offering it now.
