You can install car stereo by yourself.

I was not really surprised by others' opinions that you should go
to professionals for car stereo installation.
But on the other hand, I beg to differ.
Crutchfield (http://www.crutchfield.com) has an excellent system
for car stereo installation. I mail-ordered Kenwood KMD-42 In-dash
mini disc receiver (at $299). My car is VW New beetle 98. Crutchfield
sent me a free installation kit for the car and the receiver.
While the instructions are reasonable, they could have been better
for the people like me who have never installed car stereo.
Probably, I should have read the whole instruction booklet more carefully.
Since I hate reading manuals, I simply started by looking at the
figures in the instructions.
I was wondering what kind of installation kit Crutchfield would send,
since VW New beetle has some odd shaped cassette receiver and
cabinet. I was surprised when I received the kit. They sent a matching
cabinet cover. There are instructions which are specific to VW Beetle,
and there is a separate manual for car audio installation in general.
All the tools for pulling out the old receiver safely, ...etc. are
included. According to the manual, we should either solder or use crimp caps to connect the wires. And twisting wires to connect together was
not recommended, which I couldn't understand why. Anyway,
I twisted the wires firmly and used electric tape to cover. All these
things can be done in your room, since Crutchfield will send you some sort of adaptor. You connect the wires from the adaptor to the wires
from the receiver. And you plug the adaptor to the car.
Crutchfield will also send the antenna connection adaptor.
Doing all these things were sort of easy. The most difficult part was
caused by the fact that the audio cabinet in VW Beetle was not big enough.
So after connecting the adaptors (for receiver and antenna) to the car, there was
not enough space inside. So, I had to push the wires and adaptors to the
holes (and the holes were not big enough).

Conclusion: I have never done car stereo installation. But I managed
to do it without much trouble. Sort of straightforward. I feel that
the instructions could have been better, but what can I say ?
The first timer just installed it, it works fine, and it looks like
professional installation.
