| RedLazarus's Full Review: MPTrip MP3-CD Player |
When I heard that there were CD Players that can player CD of MP3s and regular CDs, I knew I had to have one. Unfortunately, it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Still nice and all, but even with the awesome features it DOES have it does lack some other basic ones.
First, the pros. It plays MP3 CDs perfectly fine, and 150 songs at once is nothing to complain about. Just leave it on Random and let you'll be entertained for about 10 hours. That is, if you don't plan on going anywhere for a while. The battery life on this player is only 2-4 hours, depending on alkaline or rechargeable batteries. However, on the plus side, it can be plugged into a wall outlet and let play forever, like the ultimate jukebox. And it has the power to recharge it's own batteries, so you don't have to buy a recharger. The MPTrip also has the power to record into WAV for about 8 minutes, granted you have a microphone. That would have been pretty cool, but I don't have or need a microphone. Also, it has enough ESP that keeps it skip free. However, there is no way to ever turn this off, so that might be one of the reasons why the battery life is so short. And it also has 5 different bass/treb settings, for optimal listening.
Now, the bad. I already mentioned the battery life, which can get really annoying at times. Also the unit is quite bulky, and barely fits into a pocket. It seems to be made of cheap plastic, however it is surprisingly durable. Also when I don't put the songs into folders, it only plays the first 169 of them. Anything after that is ignored. However, if you do use folders to separate your songs then all of them will be played. Besides that, it's really not a bad player.
I also tried out the Philips Expanium for around $200, and the price is the biggest difference. The Philips plays CD-RW's, and has around a 10 hour battery life. But it is still slightly bulky, and does not have recording or recharability on it's side. Overall, if you want an MP3CD player, I'd go with this one because it's got the best bang for your buck. However, if you have the cash to spare and don't want to waste CD-R's every time you find a few more good songs, then the Philips might be better for you. But overall, I think the MPTrip will suffice for most people, for the time being anyway.
