| MUGirl's Full Review: Motorola Talkabout T900 2-Way Pager (Black) |
I recently purchased the Motorola T900 instead of a Blackberry because I'd heard really good things about the T900 from coworkers. I'm thrilled with it, but while they didn't lie about how wonderful it was, they didn't truly realize how many great features the product has! Now they're more thrilled than ever, and so am I, although I will discuss the few billing downsides with you. If you have a T900, be sure to read up on all of the information that comes with your pager to maximize your investment.
And now... how to get the most out of your T900.
1. DO NOT purchase airtime in-store, esp. if you buy the product at a Radio Shack or Best Buy. Wait until you get home and call the 1-800 number inside your information packet. Not only do you get a better deal than the prepaid time, but you get more options when you speak to a customer representative and they do a much better time walking you through the registration and set up process over the phone than they do in store.
2. Purchase long-last batteries. You will appreciate having them -- mine have outlasted three co-workers who purchased their T900s on the same day, and it's been more than five weeks of heavy messaging.
3. Set up your signature. When you send messages, you can save the number of characters sent (you can send 100 per message; anymore than that you are billed for two, and so on until 500, the max. The signature will give the same sign off each time and allow you to save space for the words you really need.
4. Sign up for a mobile service such as Yahoo! (http://mobile.yahoo.com) to customize news, email and stock quotes to send to your pager. You can choose any info, any time, and it will be sent to you as frequently or infrequently as you want it. You can even control the number of emails you are sent, and who from, so you're not receiving spam on your pager.
5. Want work email? Or at least access to it? Talk to your company's IT person about getting your work emails shadowed onto your pager -- or just receive emails from those you want to hear from! It's easy to set up, especially if you use Microsoft Outlook.
6. If you tend to message a lot, you'll probably want a plan like the 1000 messages a month for $29.95 as opposed to $19.95 for 400 messages. If you're into it, you'll message a lot more than 400 messages worth each month, and at .5 a pop after 400, it makes more sense to go with the 1000 messages plan.
7. After reading the comments posted to this epinion, I felt I must add this seventh point: DO NOT PURCHASE THE LOSS PROTECTION THEY WILL OFFER WHEN YOU SIGN UP FOR SERVICE. They tell you they will allow you to replace the pager at a fraction of the cost if it's lost or stolen, but it's a LARGE FRACTION. Other epinions members are reporting that they received discounts of $30 or less, and with the price of the T900 at a probable drop point for the holiday season (they're selling like MAD) it's worth it to just hope you don't drop it. If you MUST drop your pager, wait until after the prices go down! ;) It's really not worth the mney you spend each month to get a mere "discount." If they offer a service like replacement for lost or stolen pagers, they should honor the "replacement" part and not charge you for it. Thus, save your cash.
Read the brochures for more info, but in the meantime, this will get you started and hopefully get you on your way to enjoying your new T900!
I recently received an email from a woman looking for answers to some questions she had about the T900. If you're interested in checking them out, keep reading or check out the comments section.
HOW DO I GET EMAIL FORWARDED?
To get email forwarded, talk to the IT person who serves your company. If you're trying to get private email (like Yahoo! or AOL) forwarded, contact the mobile handler (like mobile.yahoo.com) to sign up for forwarding service. With Yahoo!, I know it's free -- I don't know about AOL or other services.)
WHAT IS PRIVATE TIME?
Private Time is a function that allows you to specify a time frame in which your pager receives all of its messages and does everything else but doesn't give you any kind of alert or vibration. Good if you want your pager on but don't want to be bothered.
HOW DO I CHECK MESSAGES WITHOUT OPENING MY PAGER?
If you have your pager closed and are looking at it, feel for the button on the right side at the top near the back, right under the flip. You can press this and it will sound if you have messages; that way, you don't even have to open your pager to see if you have messages.
WHAT DOES TRANSMITTER OFF MEAN?
With "Transmitter off" you can receive messages but cannot send messages or reply to them.
WHAT IF MY BILL DOESN'T DEAL BY THE SIZE OF THE MESSAGE BUT A PRE-DETERMINED NUMBER OF MESSAGES FOR WEEKNIGHT/WEEKENDS SEPARATELY?
If your company doesn't have a character count, then the 1000/1000 deal you have is most likely per billing period, which is probably monthly. You'll have to check to be sure, but that's probably the case. Mine is slightly different, but I only use mine for email and instant messaging capablities -- although I do enjoy getting text messages from voice mail.
