You Know What They Say About A Man With A Big TV

Written: Dec 28 '00 (Updated Mar 07 '02)
Pros:Be A Trendsetter, It's 61"!! It's A Sony! Tons Of Great Features!
Cons:Expected Clarity Of A Rear Projection TV
The Bottom Line: If you want to watch TV that is nearly life-sized, with great quality, try this one!

We all know a 61" tv is not a necessity, but a luxury. Don't we all deserve a great luxury once in while?

WHY WE BOUGHT IT
:
We bought a new home in 1999 and the great-room has 20ft ceilings and huge windows. Well, there was an optional fireplace between these 2 tall windows. My husband immediately thought that between those windows was the ideal place for a big screen tv. We needed to buy one anyway, so I had never ruled-out a huge one or anything like that. And since he works so hard, I wanted him to have it. Needless to say, we didn't opt for the fireplace.

My hubby knew he wanted a Sony from the get-go, so we went to Best Buy to find the biggest Sony they had. To be honest with you, we didn't compare this one to others, it was more of an impulsive buy than a long, investigative process.

MY EXPERIENCE:
I have enjoyed this huge tv tremendously. It is easy to move, as it comes with rolling casters (how else would you move a 270lb tv?). The depth of the unit is surprisingly shallow, so it doesn't take-up as much room as one would expect it to. It is almost as tall as I am, and I am a little over 5ft tall. We keep our DVD player (Panasonic DVD-RV30 - see opinion for more info) and VCR on top of our tv, as well as stereo speakers. So no entertainment center unit is necessary.

My husband loves the fact that people on our tv are almost life-sized! It truly is an impressive unit. It is a real attention-getter. As soon as you walk into our house, from the foyer, you can see this huge tv. And the nice part about it is, our vaulted ceilings continue on the second story and you can see the tv well from the second story loft area.

If you hook-up your pc to this tv, it's a larger-than-life monitor. And DVD's are awesome as well. Some outlets are conveniently located and concealed on the front of the tv, so connecting camcorders or a playstation is really easy.

The settings and functions are excellent. I use the picture-in-picture function everyday, it's my favorite feature.

No PROBLEMS, MON:
We bought our KP-61S65 in March, 1999 and have not experienced even a minor problem. It functions perfectly, the space it requires is surprisingly less than we imagined and it is just the best tv we have ever had. There is nothing we don't like about our tv.

RECOMMENDATION:
I would highly recommend this tv to anyone interested in purchasing an excellent rear projection big screen tv. Sony really knocked our socks off with this one.

However, if you are in search of a bigger tv but picture quality is crucial, I would wait and save-up some more money for a WEGA... or even Plasma! But it will no doubt be smaller than 61"!
