| cim303's Full Review: Cambridge Soundworks Model 88 Mini System |
I have to start this review by saying Cambridge SoundWorks is a rare example of what every consumer electronics company should be. The main concern here is building high quality great sounding products at an affordable price. You can tell these guys know what their doing and love what they do. I purchased the SoundWorks multimedia sound system from them a few years ago... I've been amazed ever since then.
I purchased the Model 88CD which is basically the Model 88 with a few extras like built in alarm clock and CD player. Bottom line--this system sounds great and looks attractive. It's a solid box that outperforms most 'cheap plastic' looking systems you see at department stores but a fraction of the size. The green backlit LCD display is simple and looks professional.
You can tell it's quality, just pick it up... very heavy.
The FM tuner works great. I tried it in my office 10 stories up in downtown Chicago and with the supplied antenna and it performed just OK but that would be expected from just about any tuner in that location. When I listen to it in my apartment all of the stations come in great and I don't even have an antenna plugged in! AM works well also.
The CD player works as well as any other, playing CD-R media as well.
It has RCA inputs on the back and a stereo jack output on the front bottom.
The interface is very intuitive and easy to use. All of the buttons are nicely laid out and easy to press. This system can be easily operated by most people.
The only features I don't like would be:
1) The remote doesn't respond too well sometimes. I'll push a button and might not get a response on the first try. I have to aim the remote directly at the system sometimes also. This could be due to it's credit card sized nature and the fact that the buttons are like small bubbles (membrane style).
2) The bass can sound crummy on a song that has a lot of heavy tight bass lines if the subwoofer level (found on back) is set high.
I've heard and played with the Bose Wave Radio, the Model 88 beats it in performance and price. If you want to compare, both companies offer an in home trial with your money back if not satisfied.
