My First Digital CameraJan 08 '00 Write an essay on this topic.I picked up this camera for my wife for Christmas. The idea was to be able to take pictures and send them to family and friends via e-mail. Also, I am a webmaster and wanted to be able to publish some of our pictures on a family website. I researched the digital camera a lot, including looking over the opinions of other owners on Epinions.com. I am glad I did, because I think I bought the right camera. We used it to take pictures of Christmas at our house and to show before and after pictures of kitchen work (wallpapering and ceramic tiling) that we did, recently. Then I saved the pictures on my PC and and emailed them to family and friends. The camera has worked flawlessly and the picture quality for publishing photos on the web is very good when set in the standard quality mode. After reading here that the camera eats batteries, I decided to invest in the battery charger and the more expensive rechargeable batteries that you can buy from Olympus. The only problems I have are with the documentation and the complexity of using the camera. 1) The documentation is not very good when it comes to telling you how to connect the camera to the PC and download pictures. It pretty much says "hook it up to your PC and it works." When I tried following the directions, my PC did not recognize the camera,so I had no clue as to what to do. The manual said that you should look at your PC documentation if you have problems, and the PC said to look at your camera docs if you had problems. I went to the Olympus website and sent an inquiry for suggestions. The website says to expect an answer in 72 hours. Well, it has been over 2 weeks and no answer. I did fix my problem which turned out to be a bad cable between the camera and my PC. 2) The camera is very complicated to use. Better keep the manual handy when you want to view the pictures stored, download them to your PC, erase them, or do other things. The buttons are small and have multiple functions. Sometimes, you have to press two at once. It can get confusing. Otherwise, the pictures are great. I have had no problems taking them inside the house where lighting isn't as good as outside. For my first digital camera - I like it a lot. Since I am a "tech weenie," I really don't mind the complexity. I think it was worth the $299 it cost me. The batteries and charger cost another $50. |
