I have been shopping for a cellular plan in this area of Texas for quite a while. I go to college in Brownwood, TX and calling home to Dallas can get quite expensive. I also like to feel safe when I'm making the 3 hour drive back home. After examining my options in Brownwood, I knew that I had better go expand my options and look into surrounding cities for a plan that included Brownwood. I went to the Southwestern Bell website and was very impressed with the benefits for setting up a service in Abilene. Southwestern Bell's home coverage area is called the Wireless FREEway. A FREEway is exactly what it should be called. The home coverage area stretches to parts of New Mexico, the panhandle, parts of Oklahoma, and further east of the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex!!! All the these area have no roaming charges or long distance fees.
I purchased the Digital Edge Local Advantage 300 minute plan for $35 a month. This plan comes with 300 free minutes and 100 free long distance minute (included in the free 300 minutes). This plans also comes with free voice mail, caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, three-way calling, and Detailed Billing. There was also a special promotion going on where I had unlimited weekend minutes for a year. This is usually $4.95 extra a month if you were to add it to your plan. I purchased the Nokia 5120 phone which acts as both an Analog and a Digital phone. When traveling through the more rural areas of Texas, a digital phone will not always work, so I wanted to be able to use it regardless of where I'm driving.
I have looked at other service providers in this area such as Mid-Tex Cellular and CellularOne, but they have a very limited home coverage area and a small number of free minutes a month for the same, if not more, money then Southwestern Bell. I am extremely happy with my new service and would recommend it to anyone.
