| zwelling's Full Review: Harman Kardon TC 1000 Take Control Universal Remot... |
I purchased the Take Control over three months ago from retail. The software necessary to program my components including my Replay needed to be downloaded from the harmankardon.com website.
The unit's screen cracked when it accidently fell to the floor. The retail shop where I bought it warrantied me a replacement.
Unfortunately, the software necessary to control my components (including Replay) was no longer available for download on the Replay site. I contacted Customer Support about the upgrade and was told that they would send me a new disk if I faxed them a copy of the my original receipt. After faxing the receipt, waiting four weeks and not receiving the CD, I contacted HarmanKardon again.
This time I was told by Tammy, the manager of "Parts", that the UPGRADE IS A PRODUCT UPGRADE THAT MUST BE PURCHASED SEPARATELY ($8). Tammy claims that Microsoft is requiring HarmanKardon to not post the upgrade (which requires the hardware to be utilized) and to charge customers for it. Given how often MS upgrades my other software, I find this claim suspect.
HarmanKardon's failure to communicate the "change in policy" is the most aggravating. Unfortunately, it points to something a lot of people already know...The old school can't keep up.
You should also consider the fact that the remote HAS INSUFFICIENT IR POWER TO BE USED AT DISTANCES GREATER THAN 10 FEET, HAS A TOUCHSCREEN WHICH IS DIFFICULT AT BEST TO CONTROL and is DESPISED BY MY WIFE.
I understand that the Philips product is superior. I will be buying it soon.
