| 1GQ's Full Review: Nextel i1000 |
At first glance the Nextel i1000 cellular phone/two-way radio shows some resemblence to the fashionably sleek Motorola StarTac. They share very similar looks, basic battery design, and they even both come with an almost identical belt clip. The similarities end there though, the Nextel i1000 weighs in quite hefty by todays standards and is also quite large making it cumbersome to carry around if you don't use the included belt clip. Whether you like the look of the phone is a highly personal opinion, but one things sure...you'll know right when you see it. Its probably that I've been spoiled by my Nokia 8860, but I know I wouldn't want to be caught dead carry around one of these on my belt.
The Nextel i1000 does have its merits though albeit few. The flip has a large clear window so its easy to read the LCD display and know who's calling before you open the flip to answer the call or press the button to answer the radio. One problem often experienced in the more fashionable cell phones is volume...or lack of it. The i1000 has a very loud speaker, loud enough to fill a managers cubicle; however it can also be discreet when necessary by going into vibrate mode. Battery life is horrendous, I'd say real-world talk time is equal to about an hour, but when used in combination with the 2-way radio feature...keep a charger plug at your desk.
The reception is considerably worse than PCS, and service is quite sketchy even in a major metropolitan area like Miami. Nextel has had a considerable amount of service outages (Miami)lately, that surely doesn't say much for a company that caters to big businesses. Since the organization I work for is quite large Nextel will be installing a repeater onsite so my gripes on reception and outages should soon be resolved.
If you've never had a cellphone, or are accustomed to lousy service and low quality equipment then you probably won't mind the Nextel i1000. If your like me, a bit more picky, you probably will dread the day your boss hands you one of these coyote ugly devices!
