Sprint PCS-The Bad, The Ugly..

Written: Sep 11 '99 (Updated Oct 12 '99)
Pros:Price, sound quality, dual-phone option
Cons:Dead spots, dead spots, dumb folks

People love bashing Sprint...and generally they are right BUT I've used all the services (yes, AT&T One Rate is best but it's not available locally and unless you think it's OK to have friends always make a long distance call to reach you, it's NOT an option).

Sprint does drop calls. BUT, unless you think it is OK to have your company subsidize multiple 'full fare cell phones' (read Cellular One and GTE) to the tune of minimum $500 per employee per month, Sprint PCS starts looking OK as an economic tradeoff.

Sprint coverage in cities I travel to has remarkably improved in the past 6 months...and sure I can't use it in Aspen or on top of Northstar in Tahoe but thats where the dual-phone option kicks in. Everyone I know using Sprint gets it both ways...by lugging around the Qualcomm Dual Phone which switches easily to GTE cellular when you leave Sprint access areas. So, if you need to make that important call you can...by switching to normal cellular service at cellular rates.

Since I use my phone 3500 minutes or so a month, I appreciate getting phone bills of $350 as opposed to $700 or so which was my average before I made the switch. This really adds up and especially if you have to multiply the number across a number of employees.

Sprint uses the same operators to answer phones that all the other companies do. It's all outsourced to firms that put 'toothless big butted dopes from West Virginia' on call to spin and spit out information on CD-ROM directories for folks. But this leads to the worst part about Sprint.. trying to get them to help you on other matters. Don't even try calling their 800 number and their 'customer care' let's just say 'customer scare' GOOD LUCK!

In sum, use Sprint if you must...it's no salvation and remember if something goes wrong...throw your phone away and start from scratch!
