Toshiba VCRs - poor choice for timer recording

Oct 10 '00

I'm returning my Toshiba W706 VCR strictly because of the steps required to program a timed-recorded show.

Here is the problem, after you've set up the information to record a future program, you have to press two buttons on the remote. This shuts off the VCR and puts it into timer mode. If someone comes later and uses the VCR, they have to shut it off with those two buttons again. If your kid presses the console power button and turns it off again, you're screwed. Without pressing the two buttons on the remote, you have not enabled the timer-recording feature.

Every other VCR that I've owned or used stays in timer mode once you've programmed it. The only requirement is that the power is shut off so that the VCR can start recording.

Why have two buttons? It makes no sense. I've seen the same complaint in reviews of other Toshiba VCRs. It's too bad because I liked the picture quality and the automatic features. But I watch my favorite shows taped, not live. Two buttons on the remote is too difficult and too easy to screw up for me to trust with my television entertainment.
