| nplus1's Full Review: Motorola StarTAC ST7760 CDMA / AMPS Cellular Phone |
When I originally signed up for cellular service, I received a big honkin' Nokia as a free phone with my GTE account. It was easy to use but HUGE. I wanted a mobile phone...not a portable one. I wanted something that would fit in my pocket without screaming to everyone "HEY look at me, I'm a cell phone) I wanted a little more discretion.
Which brings us to why I purchased my Startac. It was small!!! (At the time, I believe the smallest cell phone you could buy) It also had the ability to vibrate rather than ring- a function that appealed to the part of me that hates being interrupted by someone elses ringing phone in the movie theater...at work....in a restaurant (you get the idea).
It was a little expensive for me at the time, as I was a student; but I plunked down the money and got the phone. At first I couldn't have been happier:
It was small. I was taking the phone with me everywhere. I was now more accessible than I had been with my nokia, as I had taken to leaving it in my car a lot. I also immediately set it on vibrate...no more rudeness. For months I was happy with the phone.
Then I started to notice a few design flaws:
The user interface was nowhere near as intuitive as my Nokia. (I'm still trying to figure out how to edit phone numbers). The phone needs to be opened to see who's calling, so you either have to disable the phone from answering calls when you open it (I function I really liked as I grew up watching star trek) or you have to answer all your calls and then see who's calling you. Oh well! The phone also isn't as sturdy as my Nokia; but this just makes sense, it's so much lighter and smaller, they had to use less sturdy materials.
Overall I've enjoyed having the mobility this phone allowed, however now that Nokia is making phones in a similar size and weight class, I think I may buy one of their new ones.
