| thisfatguy's Full Review: Paradigm 8.2" Powered Subwoofer SB-90 |
I did my fair share of looking for a subwoofer to my liking. I started out my stereo with a Denon receiver, a Pioneer Elite CD player, and some Paradigm front and rear speakers. This was almost 2 years ago so most of this stuff is aging quickly, in fact the receiver I bought was one of the few receivers under $1000 to be digital. Now they run for just under $100. It's like computers they update so much. Anyway this sub was the third one to make it into my house. I tried 1 powered Velodyne, and 1 10" powered Paradigm before this non-powered sub. I may be in the minority here, but I hate loud bass, whether its for music or movies. I want to be able to hear the bass and feel it, but when my ears start to bleed, I'm out. Both of the previous powered subs were just too much. Even turned all the way down they just produced too much gut turning noise.
I had almost given up on the whole subwoofer scene until I ran across this non-powered sub while returning the previous one. The salesman told me it doesn't really do a lot and its pretty expensive for not being powered (around $250) but I thought I'd give it a shot anyways.
Turns out it was exactly what I was looking for. You'd never know this little gal wasn't powered. It creates the perfect mix of bass for what I am looking for. When people are talking its quiet, when stuffs blowin up you know it. And since its only an 8", its pretty easy to hide, just stuff it under your end table and let the good times roll.
And just because it's not powered doesn't mean there aren't adjustments. You can still change the amount of bass this thing creates. I've got it right in the middle . . . ah perfect.
Don't be turned off by the price. If your going to buy a subwoofer and you go to Best Buy to spend $300 on Cerwin Vega cause its the biggest thing there, make sure and check out your local high end stereo store. Not everything is as expensive as you'd think. The bottom of the line Velodyne or Paradigm speakers will blow away anything at Best Buy. Trust me. Just because the Pioneer at Circuit City says it can handle 200 watts doesn't make it a better speaker. This little guy only spec's in at 80 watts but you'd never know it. Just go and check one out before you by something else, I think you'll be surprised.
