| tmyer's Full Review: Sony CDX-52 Car CD Changer |
Last year when I finally was able to buy a new car, I wanted a CD player - I swore to myself that I was going to buy a car with a CD player as a feature. Lo and behold when I bought the new car, well I found out that you just can't hardly get little features here and there, it all comes in packages - and packages get expensive. So I broke my promise to myself and did not have a car with a CD player, but then I saw the bright side of that - why have a single disc player when you can buy a CD changer?? So buy one I did, and in the end I have learned a CD changer is much better than a single CD player.
There were 6 disc changers, 10 disc, changers with remotes, and on and on - lots of choices. The Sony initially caught my eye because it looked nice. I know, it sounds funny, but when it comes to certain things (electronics, car interiors, etc) I put a lot of value on how it looks. I don't want to buy a piece of electronic equipment and then look at it and think of how ugly it is. Of course, functionality is important too, it has to work well and have some features, so I looked into the Sony further.
The first thing I noticed was that it had a remote, now I thought to myself "why do I need a remote control when the main controller is right up front??" - it seemed ridiculous. That was before I started using it, but I'll get to that. As far as the quality, anti-skip protection, etc it was at least comparable to the others in the same price range, if not better. So I bought it, and I am glad I did. I had the player installed by the dealer, which I recommend - I don't think that I would have wanted to do it myself, though I also don't think it would have been too hard. I had to ship my car to my overseas location (I am in the military) a few weeks later, so I only had the chance to use it a little, but was impressed up to that point. When it was time to ship the car, I took the CD player out so it wouldn't get stolen - removing it was easy. When I got my car back, the player was easy to re-install also. I am stationed in Guam right now, which - as far as I can tell, has some of the worst roads in the world, more pot-holes than the average driver sees in a lifetime. And yet, despite the bad roads, it has never skipped - and I have hit some bumps. Guam is also hot, and it seems to do a good job of dealing with that also, no problems with the player or any of the CDs inside of it.
Overall this is a good quality product. As with any Sony product the price is slightly higher than some others, but I have learned one thing in life about price - with some products the phrase "you get what you pay for" is 110% true. When it comes to electronics, cars, computers, anything that is an investment - large or small, I think a little extra cash is worth it if you are getting a trouble free, reliable, durable product. That certainly applies in this case. I would recommend this CD player to anyone.
On a final note, about that remote control - I thought it was stupid, but now having owned the thing for over a year I have a new opinion: it is very handy. Since the main controller is not standard on the car, it has to be mounted somewhere it wasn't meant to go, and you can't really attach it with screws or anything, so it's mounted in a slightly flimsy way. As a result using the remote is a better option, that way you don't have to worry about your main controller coming unglued. Plus it's easier to hold it in your hand and hit the button than it is to reach to use the main control. So it's a very nice feature, not required but nice.
