| raz00's Full Review: Nokia 5110 |
the 5110 is the first nokia to feature the unique "navi key" concept for you non nokia users out there it means you can avail most menu functions and tasks just by using one button.its not so much for the ease it offers but for the sheer beauty of its concept.also that it can get away with having fewer buttons on the keypad than other phones.nokia phones have always been user friendly and this is a big step in that direction.the menu system is the most user friendly i have encountered and it comes loaded with really useful features.the menu setup is most pleasing to the eye with well laid out spacings and graphics. The most irritating feature i have encountered in mobile phones can be the graphics, you admire its body but once you switched it on texts come out in barely legible threads-you wont have this problems in nokias!this is especially true of siemens with the cluttered appearance of the main screen in standby mode.
.the nokia 5110 looks very professional like although a bit bulky it looks very much at home in boardrooms and the office.with its fully loaded messaging functions sms is a breeze ,the capability to fetch phone no.s from the message, phonebook, even during a call makes this phone a pleasure to use.supporting data and fax it is ideal for the business user.reception wise the phone is very good even in fringe areas some calls do get through wheareas similiar generation ericssons will always fail without even trying.
..built quality is good the phone feels solid there are instances where the phone has dropped into hard surfaces with its battery flying off but no serious harm came.battery life is VERY GOOD on this phone lasting upto 5 days in real world use(not what the manufacturer tells you which is always too optimistic)get the lithium batt.with vibrator and you are talking serious talk times here.the only unpleasant thing about the 5110 as in most nokias regarding battery are the long charging times (5-6 hours),fortunately the long standby times make this task few and far between in any case you can always recharge it when you sleep.appearance wise the phone has already begun to look dated in finishing compared to latest gen phones -the changable plastic covers looking at times cheap and plasticky-it looks even worse when you change it to non original funky theme covers-i dont know why people would want to slip on such covers its real yuckky!the original colored covers are okay i guess.
but the biggest real GRIPE into buying this phone for the first time user is the fact that this phone comes only single band.5110 for gsm900 and 5130 for gsm1800 , with almost all phones supporting dual band these days this is not a luxury anymore-you are limited in your choice for service providers and will also mean reduced coverage in networks that use dual bands-also it limits your roaming capability if you like to use other networks when travelling abroard.however this is not a handicap if you are content with your network and i have never really heard anyone using the dual band function(you know like they say -"the capability to seamlessly switch back and forth between gsm900 and 1800 even during a call")since almost all networks operate on one band ,the dual band function is only useful when roaming and since that is a very expensive option its a lot cheaper if you insist on using your phone abroard to just buy a local prepaid pack.
all in all a good budget phone really loaded with features with functions you can really use(message delivery report-very important!,calculator,games-if u like them, and a host of task options at every step of the menu-example can store ,retrieve phone no.s during a call, retrieve phone no.s from sms, send phone no via sms(business card)reply sms on all no in call register -plenty things to keep you amused if not.for the first time user i would recommend this phone keeping budget in mind.
