I purchased the RCA DirecTV Satellite System, last Christmas for my parents. I paid around $130. I found that the installation and the service was fairly easy to connect. That was a big plus, especially for someone who is not mechanically inclined.
As with local cable, there are some things this system can't stop. If the weather's really nasty it interferes with the transmission, this generally doesn't last a long time. That's another point for DirecTV over local cable, since there just is no telling how long it will take for you to get your picture back on. We all know how frustrating it is when the cable goes out during a show you're really getting into.
Pricing isn't really that much different from cable, depending on certain packages. If you get the entire package and you're looking to save money, that's not the way to go.
The remote control is fun to play with, especially if you're a channel surfer like I am. There is a channel safe for parents wishing to keep certain programming from their children. On top of that, you also have a favorite channel list. With all the channels there are, this is a handy setting to have. No one likes to flip from 100 to the 900's on their channel, so I highly recommend you use your favorite channel list.
This will also destroy the video rental market, since you can check out all the new releases on the system. There again, the price range is very feasible. You go to Blockbuster and can end up spending a fortune, which is why the pay per view channels are great to have. You can request your movie and record it. Hey, that can save you a bundle if you're a video collector.
You have music channels, sports channels, movie channels, and now you can have local cable as well. All together, this is a fantastic system and hopefully with age the prices will dramatically drop.
