| alfred_payton's Full Review: Infinity Overture 1 Bookshelf Speaker |
I replaced my aging pair of huge AR 9LSi speakers about a year ago with a home theater system based on the Overture 1 speakers. I was so impressed with the sound from these little guys I bought 7 of them, 5 for my living room and 2 for my bedroom. Since I live in an apartment, space was at a premium and I can not imagine a better speaker for big sound in medium sized spaces.
The sound from the Overtures is smooth if not a bit up-front and punchy (typical of better Infinity speakers). But the bass is unmatched in a speaker this size and they handle everything I throw at them nicely. If you add a subwoofer to the system, which is a good idea, you should go for a pretty decent one to complement the full range these "satellites" provide.
If you can not find the specially packaged center channel with the TV stand, just buy a single Overture 1 since the speaker is the same. Then call Infinity directly for the TV stand; they sent me one for free. Though it is not being overly marketed as such, the Overture 1 is a much better center than any of the other center speakers Infinity sells.
The fit and finish of the speakers is nice and solid, but beware. They are much heavier than their size would imply. If you can find the matching Infinity stands you'll have a stable and attractive support that gives them the room they need to breathe outside of the confines of a crowded bookshelf.
Though originally priced pretty high, I bought them from Circuit City for $250 each during the mad rush to phase the Overtures out for Infinity's newer models. Unfortunately, the newer models, though OK, don't quite capture the unique blend of features, size and performance of the Overture 1. The only way to get them now is by online auction.
So what don't I like about them? The auto on/off switching of the built-in amps is quite audible and can be a bit annoying (my Acoustic Research ARS500 subwoofer does this silently). And though I haven't had this problem, I've heard that the built-in fuses can trip pretty easily. I've given mine quite a work out and have not had any problems but you may want to be careful about leaving your volume turned high when switching from one source to another.
