Overall these are pretty good value for money if you find them for about $200 a pair on eBay or other places. If you buy them second hand, you need to check the following - the pegs that hold the grill, and the sub woofer, if it does not crackle.
I'd recommend those as entry levels for people that do not have a sub and would like a cheap replacement for a front / sub combination.
They have a decent midrange and an OK tweeter. The TLX series is no longer manufactured for a good reason, there are other speakers out there that easily outperform them for the initial price that they have been sold for originally.
Anyway, the sound is OK. I like the JBL's mids but these speakers are lacking some low bass and although the highs are acceptable for a titanium tweeter, sometimes it sounds thin. Maybe because the tweeter is small in size.
The bass is something else, if you are planning to couple them with a decent receiver / amplifier, it does not matter that there is an internal amplifier because your amplifier is just enough.
I have bought 4 of those at uBid and noticed that 3 of them had new woofers, I think that it is pretty clear that they tend to die after a while.
When coupling them with a Denon AVR-4800, I have disables their internal amplification and they still sound OK (actually better) without it. I have them as my surround middles.
The only reason I keep them is because they sound about the same as the JBL S series (S412p, S38, S - Center) setup that I have.
I recommend them if you can get them cheap, and you have no sub with a relatively weak reciever / amplifier. Otherwise look elsewhere…
