| mixer107's Full Review: Creative Labs Nomad II (64MB) MP3 Player |
I purchased this MP3 player purely on an impulse through a deal from Emusic.com. They were giving out a free Nomad II player for purchasing $50 worth of MP3s. The player comes with a 32 meg memory card and features FM radio with presets, a voice recorder, USB, headphones, and a remote control.
My first impression of it was the size. I was expecting the size of a walkman, but it turned out to be much smaller. The software that comes packaged with the player is very easy to use. Within a couple of minutes I had the mp3s downloaded onto the player. The quality of the sound is much better than I expected. It sounds much better that if I were to plug headphones directly into my computer. One of the best features is the voice recorder. It records voices clearly with pretty good quality. I had lots of fun embarrassing my sister by recording her voice and playing back to her.
There were only several small drawbacks to the player. The main button that controls the playback is sometimes difficult to control. I found myself trying to push play several times, but the button would not respond. I also didn’t like the earphones that came with the player. They were certainly are not cheap earphones, but there was too much distortion on the bass when music is played at high volumes. I recommend getting a better pair of earphones if you are picky about bass quality.
Overall, I am delightfully surprised with this player. I recommend this player to anyone that wants get into the portable mp3 scene.
----- UPDATE -----
Now that I have owned this player for several months, I can add to my overall comment. I have noticed a strange problem in my player. It seems to skip occasionally like a CD player. The skip occurs randomly, but is not affected by abrupt motion. It seems like some sort of memory/buffer problem. I do not know if this problem is unique to my player or if it happens to all the Nomad IIs. In any case, the problem occurs seldomly and does not change my rating for the player.
It also would be nice to have more memory on the player. The 32 Meg card that came with it holds about 7 - 8 songs at a time. This is okay for short trips, but it would be nice to have more songs for long commutes in the car. It is also tedious sometimes to constantly delete and upload new songs to the player.
