I recently got a Sega Dreamcast and from what I've seen, it's a good solid game console that needs to be seriously considered when buying a new gaming system. There is not a doubt in my mind that this is the best system on the market...but that's to be expected. Whether you want to buy a Dreamcast is a different matter.
Before I review the console, though, I feel it's only fair that to tell you that I've only played 3 different games on the Dreamcast. But I've played a lot on the Dreamcast, and I think I have a good feel for what it's capabilities are.
First Impressions....
When I first took a look at the Dreamcast, I was surprised to see such a small white box. It's not a big console. Smaller than the N64 or Playstation. But don't let size fool you. This baby packs a punch.
Capabilities...
The Dreamcast boast great graphics. I mean, phenomenally great. N64 and Playstation can't compete. To make an analogy, Nintendo and Playstation are....okay I can't think of a good analogy, but basically: Sega good, Nintendo and Playstation bad.
The controllers are a bit weird at first use, but as you play you'll get used to them. They are a tweaked version of the N64 controllers, with two triggers and both analog and classic joystick control.
The Dreamcast also in Windows CE compatible and has a modem port. However, Sega has yet to do anything with that. But at least the option is there for Sega to develop it.
Should I buy...
Well, here's the deal. Dreamcast clearly dominates the market now. But the big test is to see how it does against the Playstation 2. Sega was smart to push their release date sooner than Sony to get the year and a half jump with no competition, but my gut feeling is that once the P2 comes out, it's going to knock Sega around like Mike Tyson fighting Martha Stewart. P2 will also double as a DVD player as well, which makes it all the more attractive. HOWEVER, the P2 is rumored to sell at around $400. Compared to the Dreamcast price of around $200, Playstation 2 might be just too expensive to catch on right away.
So should you buy? If you are someone who needs the best right now, then yes, buy the Dreamcast. You won't be disapointed by it at all. It's a terrific system. But, if you can wait for Playstation and can take the hit on your wallet, then I'd recommend at least waiting to see how the two systems stack up before making a decision.
Sound good? cool. I'm out like spandex. peace.
