| ktryathart1's Full Review: Nikon D1X SET Digital Camera |
About a month ago, our photographer of 20 years was able to convince the newspaper we work for to purchase the Nikon D1. This is it! If you got the bucks (in our case, said photographer gleaned the photography magazines and the internet until he found one for $4,400, suggested retail price $5,580) this IS THE DIGITAL CAMERA TO HAVE!
What do you get? Now remember this is a NIKON. You get:
battery pack,
quick charger,
video cable,
the software,
neck strap
and one year limited warranty.
That's all?? Yes that's it. If you have other 35mm SLR Nikon lenses, they will fit on this camera.
You're probably wondering why the newspaper went all out on this?
Well we had a high-end Sony digital and Olympus digital and they just weren't getting it for quality.
Some other reasons:
* You can shoot pictures at up to 4.5 per second in a series of up to 21 pictures. This is VERY IMPORTANT to a newspaper photographer who does not want to miss one iota of action. Our photographer is as close to excellent as there is (he has won first place awards from API for some of his photos in the past) in capturing the range of emotions that happen in sports, celebrations, accidents, or just getting a good photo of people at work to name just a few situations.
* The camera is not that heavy and awkward to handle. This was what surprised me that it was lightweight.
* This cuts down time in processing. You just stick the little flash card (which by the way stores up to 195 images in the camera) in the computer and view your photos in a series of 12 photos at a time in slide size then clicking on one when you want to see the full view. We then send it to our scanner person for processing and cropping if need be, to the newspaper. No dark room waiting time!
* The 2.74 megapixel CCD imaging sensor with 2,000 x 1,312 pixel gives you a really high definition picture.
* For those who want to get the feel of what the picture may look like there is a high quality 2-inch diagonal LCD screen to review your pictures.
* The Nikon also has high speed auto focusing with focus tracking and lock-on or manual focusing.
So far we have found no faults with the Nikon except that we have one other full-time photographer (one for day work and one for evening work)who would like to use the camera too! Try prying it from Mr. 20 years hands, I think he sleeps with it!
