Pros: Will never be outdone or out dated. Cons: Difficult to find service you can trust with this level of equipment.
Germany, 1986, 1,200 bucks to spend, all the industry mags read and off to the audio/video section of the PX in Fulda I go! Because specs on all devices in this price range are so simular, I determined the decision to buy would be based on appearance....

Another happy P-304 / M-504 owner
by slownlo ,Oct 12 '03
Pros: Warm sound, unlike some solid states that can sound brittle. Cons: Heavy. It actually weighs about 50lbs (NOT 100lbs).
I've owned this preamp amp combo for about 4 years now just prior to Onkyo discontinuing it. I got mine from J & R musicworld for about $500 new, and my P-304 was obtained from Ubid (back when Ubid actually had something to offer). My system consisted of the M-504 / P-304 a NAD 230 CD player and 4 Wharfedale SP-87 loudspeakers. The M-504 plays better than most amp 5x's its cost, has lots of high current power for the most demanding music, and yes its gorgeous. Mine has been working flawlessy since purchased, and since then I have sold the SP-87's and am loooking for some Dahlquist DQ-10's (a REAL speaker) to complete my system. Onkyo hit a home run with the M-504. I am sure I will be enjoying this fine amp for years to come.
