Pros: high performance, very reliable, great feature set Cons: As complicated as any other Oracle platform - requires some background
Summary: When Oracle finally released their beta of Oracle for Linux (8.0.4 I believe) in the fall of 1998, I was very excited to get an opportunity to test Linux on a distributed computing system that I had been building, which had an Oracle back-end. The very ... read more

Pros: Feature rich, with many options to improve performance, handles large amounts of data Cons: Expensive, difficult to maintain, requires expensive hardware

Pros: Stable, Serious Optimization Options Cons: Steep learning curve, Potential compatibility issues
Summary: The "i" apparently stands for "internet" because Oracle 8i contains many features that make it desirable to use within a large scale internet application environment. I'm not a database guy, so I don't know a lot of the details, but ... read more

Pros: Market share, capability Cons: Cost, manageability
Summary: Oracle is definitely the market leader in NT/UNIX database systems. It certainly is a "safe" choice given that market share. There are always Oracle DBA's available. It is hard to come up with real technical complaints against Oracle, other ... read more

Summary: If you're reading this opinion, don't buy Oracle.
These days, there are three primary reasons to buy Oracle: a) You already have a sizable investment in the platform (DBA's, developers, legacy data)
b) You need a cross-platform solution ... read more
