Good Places to Purchase Low-Cost Wines

My housemates and I love wine with dinner several nights a week...but of course we do not want to spend $30 to $40 dollars a bottle. So where to go for decent bottles of $8-$15 that enhance our meals?

We have discovered a few solid places where we always find decent wines for reasonable prices. Best of all, they are chain stores so this isn't just useful for people within my little geographical circle.

1. Trader Joe's - Like everything else at this place, the wines are good quality but not too expensive. The wines are usually stacked up, available for you to choose between straight from their boxes. Each wine is labeled with origin, price, and a few characteristics of a wine. If you still can't decide on a few, grab a salesperson and ask what she or he has tried and liked.

2. Safeway - This supermarket has inexplicably beefed up its wine section in all the stores I have ventured into. And the wine section is pretty good. I can always find decent wines, usually from the bigger labels like Gallo. Since Safeway is a supermarket, there are very few wines here from smaller places but once in a while...

3. Costco/Price Club - This is the mother lode of inexpensive tasty winebuying. Who knew!?! They always have a great range of inexpensive and mid-priced wines ranging from champagnes and cabarnet sauvignons to some tasty ports and a variety of whites. We sometimes come away here with several great $10-$15 wines. Great place for wine as gifts as well.
