Great gadget! (The "Ah So" type cork puller)Jan 04 '00 Write an essay on this topic. For years I swore by the "screw and lever" type of corkscrew, And yes, I would on occasion swear AT them! (especially when the darned thing would break off half the cork or the cork would be driven down into the bottle (this happened most often with older bottles where the cork had deteriated a bit)) Then one day last year I was at "Spec's Wharehouse" (a *giant* liquor store new downtown Houston) when I say a lady giving out samples of some new trendy wine from somewhere I couldn't pronounce. What caught my eye wasnt the overpriced wine made by french monks in northern siberia under a new moon (or some such pretentious claim-I really wasnt paying the least bit attention to the wine itself) but the thing she was using to open the bottles! Looking like some ancient ninja weapon, this tool had two little "blades" that pulled out of the handle and she just poped the cork out! Much to her dismay, rather than hear her sales pitch I simply interupted her and asked where she got the cork-puller from. With a befuddled look on her face she mumbled "row 14" and I was off like a shot. Going home, I used it to open all the bottles for the party (the reason I was at Spec's in the first place) with no trouble with the corks at all! To use it was simple... one of the "blades" (or prongs or whatever you want to call them) is a bit longer than the other. You simple slide this in between the cork and the lip of the bottle and then insert the other on the oposite side. Rock it back and forth with a gentle pressure until the prongs are all the way inserted then twist and pull (at the same time) and pop! you have a entire cork in your hands (great to reseal the bottle of you dont drink it all. No mess, no fuss, no nasty bits of cork floating in the wine. I would highly reccomend it for those who throw parties (so you can reseal the unused wine) and for those who have been having problems with corks breaking. |
