Mackeson XXX Stout: Worse Than Amateur Porn
by Teykaerts | Dec 18 '00
When one of your great passions in life is searching out great beers, it is inevitable that every now and then you are going to be let down. A beer that you’ve heard was good will turn out to be a dud, or a beer that you had a couple of years ago and...

Say What??? (Reply to this comment)

Well, everybody has an opinion. Mine is that Mackeson's is a great beer, smooth and rich and flavorful. I like Guiness, too, but it's more bitter. But honestly, Teykaerts, your writing reminds me of a college frat brother who only drinks kegged Bud; you know, a that boy's drink that's a step up from water.

So you know how to criticize (Reply to this comment)

Seems the one thing you need to have in order to be a beer snob (or any snob) is the ability to needlessly rag on "inferior beers".

You went over the top on your review. If this beer makes your toes curl, you probably cringe at 85% of the beers America produces. Good for you - you're "discerning". You probably shop at select European markets for only the finest, hand-crafted ales at no less than $15 a six-pack. Bravo.

For the rest of America, if you like dark beer, Mackeson's is a good pick. Perhaps it escapes your sophisticated palate, but the only thing I got out of your 10 paragraph complaint is that you're whiny. Hey, maybe you should move to wine instead - if you haven't already.

As for the rest of us beer drinkers, we'll stick with what tastes good, without the discussion of highlighting aromas and complex undertones.

A helpful tip (Reply to this comment)

Here's something that might help - Try drinking a fresh Mackeson straight from the fridge, instead of letting it sit out for a week or two, with cigarette butts in it and growing mold, before you drink it. Then you'll see how great a beer it really is....here's your sign!

worse then amateur porn? (Reply to this comment)
by sirjohn03
Ok, so here's what I'm thinking. Mackeson creates one of the best stouts on the market. I would either assume that you had a very bad bottle of this wonderfully crafted beer, or you are a Molsen Golden fan. I would recommend that you stick to the beers that you can see through if you think this beer is worse then amateur porn. Stick to a nice cool bottle of "Budwater" to satisfy your craving for beer.

A good stout (Reply to this comment)

Like the initial reviewer, I love Brooklyn Chocolate stout. Old Rasputin in awesome, too, if not a little overwhelming.

I think Rogue's beer, including their stouts, are good, but overrated.

I like Mackeson. It's NOT an imperial stout, and it's not pretending to be. It's just different.

I am a little resentful that it's brewed in Cincy. I used to live there, and I love the place. But, I think Euro beers should be brewed in Europe for traditional reasons.

I'm drinking a Mackeson now... mmmmmm... (Reply to this comment)
by michaelrad
In fact, I'm drinking my Mackeson at room temperature, and guess what? Its quite good. (but I've got to admit, its a little more crisp coming out of the fridge)

Whoever you are that wrote such a damning review of one of my old favorites, your parents lied... They did drop you more than once as a child. -Maybe even bit your tongue which explains the flawed sense of taste -and- smell you were left with.

Mackeson is one of those "old tried, and all right" beers. I won't try to make it out to be the best Stout on the planet, but it is extremely smooth, and I enjoy the sweetness for a change once in a while.

So if you are looking for a sweet change in Stout, don't pass up atleast trying Mackeson, and don't listen to the review that makes Mackeson out to be the "Beast" of Stouts... That is just not the case...

Let me get this straight: you think that stout isn't beer? What is it then, genius? How come in every book about beer, there is a huge section on stouts? Can you explain that? Unbelievable.

Stout or Beer? (Reply to this comment)
by gillaroo
Regard with a jaundiced eye the opinions, on beer or stout, of he
who refers to stout as beer, since he apparently doesn't know the
difference and is plainly more at home with Kool-Aid than in
the royal presence of The King of Stouts.

Your opinion is your opinion, but don't try telling me that I don't like stouts. I LOVE stouts. Beers like Rogue Shakespeare Stout and Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout rock my world. It is precisely my adoration for a good stout that leads me to dislike this trainwreck of a beer. It takes all that is good about stouts and descrecrates it. I submit that maybe YOU are the one who doesn't really like a good stout, if you like this one.

Mackeson rules. Methinks you got a bad bottle. I have had some really nice four-packs (now sold in six-packs) of this beer. Will get some soon and post notes. It's really a nice brew.

I prefer to see porn with people who at least act like they know what they are doing. Amateur porn features ugly people having boring sex, all filmed in the most unflattering light. Or so I hear.

Funny review there, and funny title, but just one question for ya bud: what's wrong with amateur porn? Sometimes it's nice to see a porn without the same old stars you've seen countless times before..... not that I'd know anything about that.

This is one of the worst tasting concoctions I have tried - unforgivable because it was unforgettable. However, one thing about your review is puzzling. I did not realize there was such a thing as "professional" porn. Oh well, live and learn.
