Basement wine cellar
Jan 07 '00
Do you have a house with a basement? If so, one of the easiest, least expensive wine cellars is your basement. Growing up, we had a "fruit room" in the basement where we would store fruit and vegetables that mom had canned during the summer. When I started making wine and beer, this became a great place to store and age both of them.
Now that I have my own house, I set up an area under the stairs and got some inexpensive wine racks from a winery in Spokane (same racks in a well known wine accessory catalog are 2x the price!). I also bought a digital min/max thermometer that I could keep upstairs, so I know what the temp range is where my wine is stored.
One nice thing about basement storage is that the temp change is gradual and where I live, didn't get above 70 degrees last summer. The one bad thing about the racks is that some bottles don't fit that well, but 85% will.
