Don't Be AfraidDec 26 '99 Write an essay on this topic.Recently on a very exciting excursion to the heart of Russia I found myself overwhelmed by the fine quality of wines available. I guess sometimes knowledge hides in some of the most curious places of the world! While dining at one of the best restaurants in the remote but historic city of Novosibirsk, (Capital of Siberia) Russia, I was offered my choice of either red or white. Surprisingly, the wine list consisted of many "french" wines at bargain prices! Bordeaux was the choice! A red wine with its own personality and courage yet smooth as silk. Amazing! Upon my return to the U.S. Immediately I found myself trying to find the perfect replacement for this romantic discovery. Not being sure which french vineyard had produced my secret pleasure, foolishly I decided the higher price tag, the better the grape. Fortunately that is not always the case. Some "Shelf wines" as I call them, has the same wonderful body and flavors of their not too distance $500.00 cousins. In fact, I have found that some $10 to $15 bottles of Italian and German wines are the finest anywhere. And you don't have to fly 14,000 miles to realize this. Although good french wine will always be my favorite. In the case of a light pocketbook, always be willing to explore your options. There are hundreds possibly thousands of different wines to choose from so don't be afraid to sample! It is a good idea to write down the good wines you experience and never be afraid to ask to see the bottle. In the finest restaurants it's customary to bring a selection to your table upon request. And never be afraid to ask which is the better wine. Always be willing to listen but use good judgement and never order the bottle until you have sampled by the glass. There are many romantic memories waiting patiently for you out there so begin your journey and happy hunting! The Timatola |
