The vacuvin is a perfect example of someone addressing a problem head on and coming up with a perfect solution. It is so simple. Wine starts to go bad when it is exposed to air. When you recork wine, you seal air in the bottle, which begins to oxydize the wine. What a simple idea to create a cork that is sealed by sucking the air out of the bottle, creating a vacuum that holds the cork in place.
The elegant simplicity of the idea is enhanced by good execution. The idea actually works as the theory says it should! You stick a rubber thing in the bottle, put a simple hand pump over it, give it a few strokes, and voilą... wine lasts for days without any noticeable deterioration.
I must admit this device has little practical advantage in our house because wine seldom lasts more than a day undrunk. But on those rare occasions when we've been out several nights in a row and a bottle has been vacuvined, it has worked perfectly. If it saves just one bottle of good wine, it's a bargain at twice the price!
