Spanish & Galician wine-tasting & tapas

We just featured a Spanish & Galician wine-tasting party at a superb Spanish restaurant in Vancouver, Canada. HUME TRAVEL CORPORATION of Vancouver, BC sponsored the travel presentation and Galician tapas for the event. In addition a wine agent, MARBE OF CANADA TRADING LTD. sponsored the wine portion of this tasting and they brought some very nice selected Spanish & Galician wines, even some nice Cavas.
The whole tasting was on a Galicia, Spain “Hidden Celtic Paradise” theme with a travel slide show to the region’s wineries and explanation of where the different Domination of Origins are located, it was quite a successful and informative night.
Some of the wines featured in the tasting where:
MARTIN CODAX 1997 - An excellent Albarino white wine from the Rias Baixas region in Galicia, Spain. Albarino has become very popular in the US and Canada it has a lot more body and fuller flavour compared to Chardonnay. Goes along great with Seafood due to the full-bodied flavour. It scored 90 points in some recent wine tasting. The winery is located in the village of Vilarino-Cambados sitting a top of Burgans hill with excellent views from the winery of the bay of Cambados. When I visited the winery last summer we got lucky to see a stunning sunset, the sky was total lite up with red, orange and blue colours. This winery has employed the most modern techniques of Albarino wine making, with its temperature-controlled vats.
OCHOA TEMPRANILLO CRIANZA 1996 - This wine is from the D.O. of Navarra. The colour, a ruby red. The aroma, full and bright. The taste, perfect harmony between wine and oak. Slight flavour of red berries with touches of cinnamon. Well recommended with red meats and cheeses. It has scored up to 82 points at wine tastings.
CAVA JUVE Y CAMPS, RESERVA DE LA FAMILIA - I only tried a little bit of this at the tasting it was a very nice Cava. Some tasting notes that have been said about it are: "Dry, soft and smooth on the palate, with a richness that comes from the four years it has spent aging. This is served well as an aperitif.
The Galician owner of the restaurant prepared some delicious Galician Tapas like: "Pulpo a feria" Boiled squid sprinkled with Spanish paprika. "Empanadas" Galician pie one stuffed with tuna and another with beef also inside the pies are red peppers, onion and many other goodies, it is up to the Galician chief to create a winning combination. It is served in slices. "Jamon Serrano" Cured Spanish ham on small round toasted bread with olive oil and a slice of tomato. "Pan de Maiz" This is my favourite bread made of corn I always have this with a nice "Cocido" Galician stew when I am in Galicia eating with my in-laws.
We played Galician Bagpipe music in the Background. Actually it was the CD that the famous Chieftains record with a Galician Bagpiper named Carlos Nunez. The CD is called "SANTIAGO" if you get a chance pick up a copy it goes nice for background music at a Galician theme wine tasting.
I live in Vigo, Spain, but temporary I am in North America to show North Americans what Galicia has to offer. If you would like to find out more about what I do and about Galicia visit our website at: www.euroadventures.net I welcome any discussion about Galician and Spanish wines & cuisine.
