Miss the Original Schaefer Beer (Reply to this comment)
by SPKorn
Schaefer Beer from the 70s, when it was brewed in New York or Newark, was a distinctive beer...cans or on tap
Then, they lost their way, and product was never the same
I wish the original would return. Believe it would be a hit as something more flavorful than Bud, etc

For a cheap beer it's not bad (Reply to this comment)
by sicuso1
I went on a quest to try all the second-tier, cheap beers of yesteryear. I tried Carling, Pabst, Gennesee, Shlitz, Golden Anniversay, Stroh's etc.
I would include Shaefer in this bunch and it was easily the best in this category.
Not much different than Miller or Coors but cheaper.

I've run across it on tap before, even in NYC, so there's a certain cachet to go "slumming with Schaefer" (kind of like people are now doing with PBR and others). Thanks for commenting and the tip. cheers

Looking for Schaefer? (Reply to this comment)

Read your opinion and thought it was right on the money. Just in case you do get a taste for Schaefer again... there is this small bar in Darien, Connecticut called Ernie's they have Schaefer on tap. Yep you read me right, on tap. You can just imagine what type of bar it is. But believe me it's a fun place.

Thanks for commenting. Question: Is saying a beer has "a nice personality" the same kind of insult when directed at a person? Inquiring minds want to know. cheers

Thanks for commenting. Hey, you should drink what you can afford of course. My college brews were either Hamms or Genny Cream Ale for the most part. cheers

Thanks for commenting. Somewhere along the way the recipe was altered and the beer wasn't quite the same. I still drink it from time to time, but it ain't the same. I imagine the same can be said for many pre-1970 brews as well. cheers

Schaefer - The one beer I have, when im having more than one. (Reply to this comment)

I live in Southern Jersey and recently discovered the goldmine of Schaefer Beer. As a college student, I am forced to be cheap on my spending...especially while buying alcohol. A few weeks ago I went to a liqueur store with one of my buds, and noticed a sign on the outside window "Schaefer Beer 30 Pks $9.50". My friend and I figured that the beer would be absolutely horrible because of its low price, but thought it would be funny to try it out. So we did, and after the first sip we fell in love with the lager. It actually wasn't bad at all. And since it's a lager, it is 4.7% alcohol, unlike the watered down beers of 4.2%. Now Schaefer has become our college beer of choice, and we have been spreading our great find to our fellow students. The unique Schaefer 30 box has also found a spot on our wall in our dorm.

Schaefer Beer -- was good, really good. (Reply to this comment)
by billybubb
Schaefer was a really good beer. It's slogan was accurate -- the first beer was a little harsh and bitter, the second beer tasted sweeter and more substantial, the third was better yet. It was one of the only beers I've ever had that got better, not obnoxious, after one or two, and kept getting better. It was a TRUE beer drinkers beer. What ever happened to that recipe? It's a real shame. I just had Reisdorf Krolsch. It's from Germany and it's the closest thing that I've had to Schaefer - but pricey.
I hope somebody rescues the original Schaefer recipe.

Close... but not quite on the history of Schaefer Beer (Reply to this comment)
by homicide-md
Schaefer was purchased by Stroh Brewing in 1981. Stroh conitued to operate the former Schaefer Lehigh Valley brewery (also known as Fogelsville or Breinigsville) until it's demise. I will get back to that. Stroh's purchased G. Heilman of LaCrosse, WI (not the other-way-round as you and surmised) Shortly after that purchase Stroh Brewing decide to divest it's brewing interests and concentrate on real estate development. Pabst Brewing (a privately help corporation) continued to operate the Lehigh Valley facility until 2001 when it exited the brewing industry and refocused as a beer-marketing company. Pabst continued to brew Schaefer until this time. Now Miller Brewing brews all of Pabst's beers. Schaefer remains available in regular and light versions in 30-12 oz. can cases. Regular Schaefer can be found among some northeastern distibuters in 24-16 oz. returnable-bottle cases.

Nice job (Reply to this comment)

A well crafted review of a beer whose day has come and gone. It seems our tastes are polarized these days with some like your dad headings for less taste and calories and some going for quality and variety. Good job,

Re: Great review...and I can relate (Reply to this comment)

Thanks. I actually had some Narrangansett on tap this summer while vacationing in Ogunquit, Maine. It wasn't bad, had sort of Sam Adams mouth feel to it but less of the ale taste and more of the beer texture. Very drinkable. It was available in six packs, but after my wife shops there is little room for my beer.

Thanks. I remember this beer so well when I was sneaking some of my Dad's. But it really is a poor product nowadays.

Well, you did your homework on this one, that's for sure! Impressive. I hate this beer, though it was cheap at $2.99/six-pack in the MIDWEST. Tough to find, though.

Re: Neat Bottles (Reply to this comment)
by MiDoyle
Yeah, the whole labelling of beers has kind of lost the classic look of the 40's/50's which is a shame. I forgot about Schmidt's. That was a real Philly area beer. I actually had some of the new and revived Rheingold on Friday at a bar in NYC and it wasn't half-bad. cheers.

Neat Bottles (Reply to this comment)
by Bruguru, in Restaurants & Gourmet
I have a few Schaeffer bottles in my collection, one (from the Stroh days) has a styrofoam label intended to keep the bottle cold longer. It's a shame to see an old brewery or brand go, I still miss the little barrel-shaped Schmidt's beers from Philadelphia.
