A Fine, Cheap Tuscan Red

I shop for Italian reds all the time. I've bought and enjoyed $12,$17,$27,$34 and $54 Barbera's, Barolo's, Bruno di Montalcino's, Rosso di Montepulciano, Chianti's and Super Tuscan's. Because I daily enjoy
red wine with meals, I had been on the lookout for a cheap but good table wine. Several months and 20+ bottles later I am here to tell you I have found a Super Tuscan red table wine that far exceeds my expectations.

Its name is Monte Antico either 1995 or 1997. I have paid as little as $6.99/bottle at BJ's and as high as $8.99/bottle at Total Beverage. It is bottled by Santa Lucia-Pisa for Empson & Co.,Milano, Italy. The sole U.S. importer is Empson (U.S.A.)Inc.in Alexandria, Virginia (719 Prince Street, 703.684.0900). The bottle label in part reads "This Sangiovse varietal is the result of the synergy between Italian wine specialist Neil Empson and renowned winemaker Franco Bernabei...Its full body and lush , fruity flavor make it a perfect match for cheese, pasta and all meat dishes." All this is true.

If you can't find this wine, you or your wine shop should call Empson U.S.A in Alexandria, Va. and urge them to send some bottles your way. Luckily I live in Alexandria. Enjoy!!!
