THIS WAS MORE THAN A WINE TASTING PARTY

Sep 11 '00

Some years ago our group of friends received an invitation from one of the couples to a Tom Jones party. We were told to bring a jug of wine for each of us plus wear some old clothes. Well we all were curious and suspicious of something different was going to happen at this party. This couple was very secretive about their plans and would not tell us what was going to happen.

As per our instructions we went to our liquor store and I purchased two bottles or should I say brown colored crock like bottles of Lancers wine. It looked like a good jug of wine to bring to this party. Lancers is a Portuguese wine and our liquor store was good about stocking unusual and different wines because someone requested it.

The Saturday evening finally arrived for this party, all our friends showed up at the same time as we were told. When entering their home we were led to their dining room. The table and chairs and other furniture was removed. They had spread sheets over the floor with pillow placed around the room. We were all asked to find a place to sit and have our wine ready for a toast by our host. He welcomed us to our Tom Jones party and to let the fun begin.

Our food was brought in baskets and placed on the floor in the center of the room. They offered fried chicken, vegetables such as raw cauliflower, celery, broccoli, tomatoes and green peppers. There was a basket of hard rolls, a container of butter and last a big basket full of fruit such as grapes, apples, bananas, and peaches. It all looked very inviting, but we had no utensils or plates. We were told we had to eat with our fingers. This news brought a good round of laughter as the food basket began to be passed around.

As usually we were very sedate at first, passing the food around and drinking our wine. Good conversation continued as we relished our food with our fingers. Spreading butter on our hard rolls was a little messy and the chicken adding more mess. As the evening wore on the food began to be tossed back and forth across the room. We also were feeding each other by dropping food in their mouth. More squeals and shouts of laughter as more wine was consumed. It soon became apparent why we were asked to wear old clothes our messy fingers were wiped on our clothes and on each other. Even my husband’s glasses got coated with butter.

It soon became apparent that we needed to get up and move around, we decided we would all go to our Country Club where another party was going on. This was not to good idea as the wine made us all silly and loud. Some of us were still hanging onto their jug of wine. We soon left there and stopped in a local bar, I don’t really know why. It was late and the bar was ready to close. Some of us decided to help him sweep up and I remember dancing with a broom. This also was a bad idea and we left there and ended up in a park singing songs lead by our music teacher.

Soon wiser heads prevailed and it was time to break up this party and go home. Talk about not drinking and driving should have been a concern. As luck would have it we did all make it to our homes safely. We did discuss this afterwards and decided we did have a good time at this Tom Jones party, but did not think we would ever have another one. Drinking this much wine makes you act crazy that was not normal. You lose your mental capacity to think clearly. This did turn into a wine tasting party, as we exchange samples of other wines brought by the guests. This did not help our situation. My suggestion is to plan your parties, but keep them under control. Enjoy your friends, as this is what memories are made of.
