I bought this product over a year ago at the local CostPlus for around $10. At the time I thought it was a little pricey for a kitchen gadget, but since then it has earned back its purchase price many times.
My husband and I usually enjoy a single glass of wine, each, with dinner. Some nights he'll have a beer, and I'll have wine. A typical bottle lasts us at least 3 days, and depending on what's on the menu, can last as long as 5 if I'm the only one drinking it. You can imagine what a disaster this was in our pre-Vacuvin days. On day 3 I'd sniff then take a quick sip to see how far along the wine had gone in the vinegar-making process... many, many half-bottles ended up going down the drain.
The Vacuvin really does work!. The vacuum system pumps the air out of the bottle, preserving the wine in its current state. This amazingly simple idea, beautifully executed, is a must for anyone who is ever left with partial bottles of wine -- and what wine-drinker isn't?
Here's how it works: you moisten the special rubber cork that comes with the pump and put it into the bottle. Then fit the pump over the cork, and lift the handle up to pump out the air until you feel some resistance. That's it! To open the bottle, just squeeze the top of the cork to allow air to re-enter the bottle through the slit in the top of the cork.
Even better, the rubber corks are easy to clean. The pump itself is small and easy to store. You don't need a lot of elaborate equipment to keep your wine fresh.
This product saves money, is easy to use, and easy to clean. I would recommend it for everyone who ever drinks wine, even if it's only once or twice a year. I have gone on two-week vacations and come back to wine that was as palatable as when I first opened it. The savings in recovered wine alone make this product worth having, especially considering how easy it is to store it when it is not in use.
