Full character but not harsh
Written: Jan 03 '00
Pros:very likeable, not harsh, affordable
Cons:no outstanding characteristics
Like most of the Rosemount Estate vintages I have tried, I found this to be a very likeable and reasonably priced wine that doesn't have powerful characteristics that may scare away less experienced tasters. Easily combined with a variety of foods, it has only a mildly dry aftertaste that assures it is a nice red varietal, but certainly not harsh. The modest price tag (about $10 per bottle) doesn't exclude it from less formal or special occasions to save it for the black tie crowd either. The Merlot seems to perform much like the vintner's other wines, meaning they all are wonderful wines, but they don't have an outstanding characteristic that makes them singular. I consider this to be a strong point as many wines that are applauded for having a particular strength seem to overpower the taster with it. I thoroughly enjoy the Merlot as it is a wonderful part of a meal, not the focal point of it.
