Portland: Bobby Dazzler, Old London Style, Holiday Ale

I am Jack’s real life
I took a couple of days away from epinions, and kind of made a commitment not to drink before Christmas Eve, and not to post any more reviews until after Christmas. Well, guess what? I’m posting another review.

I am Jack’s all proclaiming-self
This is actually a 6-pack I picked up a few days ago at Trader Joe’s. I’d been picking up all the on-sale lagers at Vons, but had been disappointed with their lack of seasonal selections. I almost passed this one by, as beers that jump out at me are usually those best ignored. It was a seasonal brew, which is the only reason I took a closer look.

Served in a stumpy brown bottle, there’s a maroon label with some fat moustached Irish looking guy on the neck, and the words “Bobby Dazzler” in some kind of zip, wham, bang comic book style lettering in the middle. Next to jump out are the words “Old London Style” and “Holiday Ale”. This suddenly struck me as a pretentious beer. Most any micro brew with old London style printed on the label is not the kind of beer you’d expect to find in London. Also, Bobby Dazzler refers to some kind of show-off or extravert in England. In short, the title was too wordy, trying to throw too many ideas at me. Slow down, just tell me your name and we’ll go from there.

I am Jill’s obnoxious brother
It was only upon closer examination that I realized this beer was made by Portland Brewing Co. At $4.99 it had quickly talked its way into a ride back home. Kind of like the irritating, obnoxious guy in the bar you have no interest in talking to, until you realize you know his sister.

I am Jack’s obedient servant
Even though this beer, had made it’s way back to my home, there were still plenty of other beers in the house, and it was 4 days until I finally checked it out. Luckily the garage hits about 50F late at night, so I don’t even need to refrigerate my ales. They just come perfectly night chilled.

I am Jack’s tormentor and torturer
Well, I wasn’t going to drink tonight, but as usual tonight was one of those busy nights at work and not only did I need to eat, I also needed something to help me wind down. I’d not tried this yet and figured I’d try a couple.

I am Jack’s undying focus of attention
So the first thing you’ll notice after releasing the cap is the hop in the aroma. Either immediately or a few seconds after the pour you should also get a little fruit, maltiness. This is a good beer in the nose that will greet you with every sip. The pour is rather foamy. I know the 2-finger foam is the ideal, but my intention is to perfectly get the whole bottle into a pint glass. An easy pour achieved this. It pours to a great deep red to brown, which really does remind me of those bitters back home. At the same time, though, it is certainly somewhat lighter in texture. You can see your fingers on the other side of the glass. The beer also sits very lightly on the tongue. The carbonation, while light is certainly noticeable.

I am Jack’s oral pleasure
The taste of this beer works very well. Unless you throw the beer around a little, all you’ll get is a little bitterness. However, savor this brew, and you’ll get the malty sweetness on the tip of the tongue, followed by a little creaminess. Of course this beer does finish bitter, but you are left with a mixture of chocolate malt and fruit.

I am Jack’s empty glass
While this may not be my favorite Christmas brew, it certainly is a good one and worth a recommendation. Try not to think of food with the beer, think rather of the beer itself. While I just cooked myself up some fries, this should prove versatile with any meat or fried appetizer. At $4.99 for 6, this certainly is a great value beer. Just one question: why didn’t they just put “Portland Winter” on the label?
