Free copy of your credit reports for residents of CO, GA, MD, MA, NJ, VT

Anyone who's been denied credit recently is entitled to a free copy of their credit report. In addition, residents of Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Vermont are entitled to a free copy of their credit report once a year from each of the three major credit bureaus whether or not they've been denied credit (lucky devils). Residents of these states are fortunate; in my opinion everyone should be entitled to a free copy of the information these bureaus collect on them. But that's not the way it is, not yet anyway.

I wanted to post the information you may need to get in touch with the credit bureaus. Oddly, you have to call their phone numbers to get a free copy of your credit report. (This is odd because web access is the cheapest way for companies to disseminate information.) Instead, these bureau web sites offer fee services, like credit monitoring or credit reports for a fee (~$8.50), on their web sites.

The three major credit bureaus are:
Equifax (800-997-2493; www.equifax.com)
Experian (888-397-3742; www.experian.com)
Trans Union (800-888-4213; www.transunion.com)

I strongly encourage anyone eligible for a free copy of their credit report to get one from each company. When the credit reports arrive in the mail a week or so later, go through them carefully and make sure to notify the agencies of any errors quickly, so that you can get mistakes fixed BEFORE you need the credit.
