Common Sense Tips On Avoiding ATM Fees
Jan 06 '00
the press has covered the outrage against ATM fees quite well lately, but they have provided few tips for avoiding the annoying fees. Here are a couple of my ideas that can help you avoid the fees:
1. Do your banking at a big bank that has a lot of ATM machines. The more ATM machines a bank has the more convenient it is for you to withdraw your money and, hence, the fewer charges you will incur from using other bank's ATM machines.
2. If the first suggestion does not agree with you, withdraw enough money so that you will not have to make numerous trips to the ATM. Take out two weeks worth of cash rather than just a week's worth. You will have the cash on hand and, therefore, not have to make the extra trip to the ATM.
3. Avoid First Union ATM's at all cost unless you do your banking with them. First Union is well know for charging their own customers for anything and everything so you can imagine what they do when you use their ATM machines.
4. Finally, use a credit card in lieu of cash whenever possible. However, two things to consider: Always pay the balance in it's entirety and get a card that will reward you in some manner. I use my frequent flyer card for every purchase over $10 and am constantly amazed at how quickly the miles add up.
I am just as much as much against ATM fees as the next person, but I have used the strategies listed above in order to avoid them whenever I possibly can. I would suggest giving it a try and seeing if you incur fewer fees.
